What does WordPress hosting cover?

Hosting provides the server resources that store your website’s files and database and deliver its pages to visitors. The package may also include an SSL certificate, backups or other services, but the details depend on the provider.

Hosting, domain registration and business email are separate services, even when one company sells them together. Check which ones are included and what each will cost to renew.

A hosting account does not automatically mean someone is checking your contact form or looking after every WordPress plugin. “Managed” can describe different levels of support, so ask for the actual tasks covered.

What does website maintenance add?

Maintenance looks after the website itself. A clear plan should explain who updates WordPress, themes and plugins, who checks backups, and what happens when a problem is found.

• Updates: applying appropriate software updates and checking important functions afterwards.
• Backups: keeping recoverable copies of both the files and database, with a defined retention period.
• Monitoring: detecting availability problems and explaining who responds to an alert.
• Checks: testing key journeys such as sending an enquiry or completing a purchase.

Backups are most useful when you know they can be restored. Ask where copies are stored, how far back they go and whether recovery has been tested. An online shop may need more frequent backups than a brochure website because new orders change its data throughout the day.

Does an SSL certificate make the website secure?

HTTPS protects data in transit between a visitor’s browser and your website. It does not update your plugins, prevent every account compromise or prove that a backup will work.

Keep access limited to the people who need it, use strong individual passwords and enable two-step verification where available. Security involves several measures; an SSL certificate is one part of that work.

Can you manage WordPress yourself?

Yes, if you have the time, confidence and access to handle it. You will need a routine for updates and backups, a way to test important features, and a recovery plan if something goes wrong.

For a more complex site, test significant changes on a separate copy before applying them to the live website. Urgent security fixes may need attention sooner than your normal maintenance schedule.

Paying for maintenance makes sense when the time involved or the cost of an interruption outweighs the fee. Agree what your provider handles and what remains your responsibility, including content accuracy and paid software renewals.

Six questions to ask before choosing a provider

1. Does the price include hosting, software maintenance or both?
2. How often are backups taken, where are they stored and what does a restore cost?
3. Who checks the site after an update, and what happens if an update causes a problem?
4. What support hours and response arrangements apply?
5. Are content edits, premium licences and malware cleanup included or charged separately?
6. Can I obtain my website files and database and move to another provider?

Get the answers in writing. Clear responsibilities matter more than a long list of features with no explanation of how they are delivered.
