How much does website maintenance cost in Ireland?

Most small business websites in Ireland cost between €30 and €150 a month to look after properly, and online shops cost more. This guide explains what's behind the price, what a plan should include and how to compare quotes.

Typical prices in Ireland

Prices published by Irish web agencies fall into a few clear bands. All of these exclude VAT.

Type of serviceWhat it usually coversTypical cost
Basic careSoftware updates, backups, security scans, SSL and uptime monitoring€30 to €100 a month
Care with supportAdds faster responses, small content changes and regular checks€100 to €200 a month
Online shopsAdds order and payment testing, more frequent backups and recovery planning€150 to €300 a month or more
Pay as you goNo monthly fee: fixes and changes when you ask for themQuoted per job or by the hour

Ranges are based on prices published by Irish web agencies in October 2026. Many show "from" prices and confirm the final price after reviewing the website.

Three ways to look after a website: do it yourself, costing your time plus plugin licences; pay as you go, quoted per job or by the hour with nobody watching the site in between; or a monthly plan, typically €30 to €150 a month, covering updates, backups and monitoring with someone acting on alerts
Which option is cheapest depends on how much your website matters to the business.

What the monthly fee should cover

Whatever the price, a maintenance plan worth paying for includes:

  • Updates to WordPress, plugins and themes, checked so they don't break the site.
  • Daily backups stored away from the website's own server, and a restore that has actually been tested.
  • Uptime and security monitoring, with someone who acts on the alerts.
  • SSL certificate and domain checks, so nothing lapses by accident.
  • Malware scanning and a firewall to block malicious files and traffic.
  • Function checks on contact forms, bookings and checkout.
  • A small allowance for changes, such as new opening hours, prices or staff photos.
  • A short report, so you know what was done each month.

For a weekly, monthly and quarterly routine, see the WordPress maintenance checklist in our hosting and maintenance guide.

What makes maintenance cost more

  • The platform. WordPress sites need the most hands-on care. Hosted platforms such as Shopify, Squarespace and Wix update their own software as part of the subscription, though you may still want help with content, settings and add-ons.
  • Plugins and custom code. Every plugin is something else to update and test.
  • Selling online. WooCommerce shops need careful testing after updates, because a failed update can stop orders.
  • How fast you need help. A same-day response costs more than next working day.
  • How many changes you make. A site that changes every week needs more time than one that rarely changes.
  • The site's condition. An older site with abandoned plugins or an unsupported PHP version usually needs a one-off clean-up before a monthly plan makes sense.

Is hosting included?

Some maintenance prices include hosting and some don't. Managed WordPress hosting on its own typically costs around €20 to €60 a month, so a cheaper plan that leaves hosting out can cost more in total. When you compare quotes, add the two together and ask where the website will be hosted.

Our managed web hosting page explains what good hosting includes.

Doing it yourself

You can look after a simple WordPress site yourself. The money spent is small, usually premium plugin licences and a backup tool, but it takes regular time. Someone also needs to know what to do when an update breaks the site or a backup won't restore.

It suits confident owners of simple sites. If your website brings in enquiries or sales, the cost of it being down for a few days usually outweighs the cost of a plan. Our guide covers what managing WordPress yourself involves.

The cost of skipping it

  • Security holes. Out-of-date plugins and themes are one of the most common ways attackers get into WordPress sites.
  • Lost enquiries. A contact form can stop sending emails without anyone noticing for weeks.
  • Warnings and outages. An expired SSL certificate shows visitors a security warning, and an expired domain takes the whole site offline.
  • Unsupported software. PHP 8.1 and older no longer get security fixes, and PHP 8.2 reaches end of life on 31 December 2026. Our October 2026 security patches guide explains why that matters.
  • Bigger bills later. Cleaning up a hacked site, or rebuilding one with no backup, is usually far more expensive and disruptive than routine maintenance.

Comparing quotes

Two plans at the same price can include very different things. Ask each provider:

  1. Is hosting included, and where will the site be hosted?
  2. How often are backups taken, where are they stored, and when was a restore last tested?
  3. Are premium plugin licences included?
  4. How many small changes are included each month, and what do extra changes cost?
  5. How quickly will you respond if the site goes down?
  6. Is there a set-up fee or a minimum term?
  7. Does the price include VAT? Irish VAT (currently 23% on most services) is added if the provider is VAT-registered.
