How AI tools choose who to recommend

AI assistants search the web, then summarise what they find. They tend to recommend businesses that:

  • have clear pages saying exactly what they do, where, and for whom;
  • have the same name, address and phone details everywhere;
  • are well reviewed and mentioned on other trusted websites;
  • let the AI tools’ crawlers read their website.

There’s no secret trick, and anyone who sells one is guessing. The good news is that the work also helps your Google rankings.

Is AI search replacing Google?

Not for most local searches yet, but it’s growing quickly, and Google now shows AI Overviews above many results. The same work helps with both, so you don’t have to choose.

Should I block AI crawlers?

You can block the crawlers that collect training data, such as GPTBot, without affecting search. Blocking the search crawlers, such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, means those tools can’t recommend or link to you.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

It does no harm, and we can add one, but no major search engine has said it uses it. Clear pages and structured data matter far more.
